President Joe Biden’s administration is considering a new plan that would force illegal immigrants to remain in Texas while they wait for their asylum screening, according to three officials.
To force illegal immigrants to remain in Texas, officials told the Los Angeles Times that authorities would track migrants’ locations through GPS monitoring devices, including ankle bracelets.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, slammed Biden’s proposed “scam” and vowed to send more “buses of migrants” to Washington, D.C.
“Biden considers forcing migrant families to remain in Texas. This scam was tried years ago & was shot down by a judge. We will send Biden the same swift justice. And, we will add even more buses of migrants to Washington D.C.,” Abbott posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Illegal immigrants and their advocates also spoke out against the plan.
“When people cross borders their human rights come with them,” said Marisa Limón Garza, head of the Las Immigrant Advocacy Center in El Paso.
Garza accused both Biden and Abbott of “playing games with the lives of thousands of children and families.”
“Migrants are not hot potatoes,” Garza said.
Since Biden took office, nearly six million illegal immigrants have been apprehended at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Southwest Land Border.
The proposed plan comes as “sanctuary cities” across the United States grapple with a massive influx of illegal immigrants.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently warned the border crisis will “destroy New York City.”
“Let me tell you something, New Yorkers. Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this. I don’t see an ending to this. This issue will destroy New York City. Destroy New York City,” Adams said Wednesday. “We’re getting 10,000 migrants a month.”
