Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Friday that he has appointed U.S. Attorney David Weiss a special counsel in the investigation of Hunter Biden.
“I’m here today to announce the appointment of David Weiss as a special counsel consistent with the Department of Justice regulations governing such matters. In keeping with those regulations, I have today notified the designated members of each House of Congress of the appointment,” Garland said.
Garland said Weiss requested the appointment because “his investigation has reached a stage at which he should continue his work as a special counsel, and he asked to be appointed.”
“Upon considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter, I have concluded it is in the public interest to appoint him as special counsel,” Garland said.
Garland said this appointment demonstrates his “commitment to provide Mr. Weiss all the resources he requests.”
“It also reaffirms that Mr. Weiss has the authority he needs to conduct a thorough investigation and to continue to take the steps he deems appropriate in dependently based only on the facts and the law,” he added.
The decision comes after Hunter Biden’s former business partner Devon Archer told the House Oversight Committee that Hunter and his father, President Joe Biden, spoke on more than 20 calls about Hunter’s foreign business deals.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) called Archer’s testimony “extremely damning” and revealed “the Bidens were in the actual business of influence peddling.”
Recent IRS whistleblower testimony also revealed that the Department of Justice blocked investigators from collecting evidence relating to President Joe Biden’s alleged participation in his son Hunter’s business dealings.
In previous testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee, whistleblower Joseph Zeigler said U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and the DOJ interfered with important facets of the IRS’ investigation into Hunter Biden, including agents’ apparent refusal to look into a WhatsApp message sent by Hunter to a Chinese Communist Party-linked business man.
