Former President Donald Trump gave an update on Thursday on his anticipated indictment over the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol storming, warning the public not to trust the “fake news on anything.”
“My attorneys had a productive meeting with the DOJ this morning, explaining in detail that I did nothing wrong, was advised by many lawyers, and that an Indictment of me would only further destroy our Country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “No indication of notice was given during the meeting — Do not trust the Fake News on anything!”
The former president recently revealed he is the target of another Department of Justice criminal investigation, this time over the Capitol storming.
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Trump accused President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice and Attorney General Merrick Garland of election interference by going after Biden’s “NUMBER ONE POLITICAL OPPONENT.”
Sources familiar with the investigation told ABC News that the three federal statutes the former president is accused of violating include tampering with a witness, informant or victim; deprivation of rights under color of law; and conspiracy to commit offense or defraud the United States.
Target letters, such as the letter sent on Sunday to Trump, are usually provided to subjects involved in criminal investigations in order to inform the subjects of the target letters that they could face indictment, according to ABC News.
“Nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before, or even close,” Trump said on Truth Social, adding, “THIS WITCH HUNT IS ALL ABOUT ELECTION INTERFERENCE AND A COMPLETE AND TOTAL POLITICAL WEAPONIZATION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT! It is a very sad and dark period for our Nation!”
This was a breaking news story. The details were periodically updated as more information became available.
