President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice recently charged former President Donald Trump with three more crimes in the classified documents case.
According to the updated federal indictment, in addition to 37 other charges, Trump is accused of additional counts of willful retention of national defense information and obstruction.
Trump allegedly asked a staffer to delete surveillance video at Mar-a-Lago after receiving a subpoena from investigators.
The lengthy indictment, first revealed in June, states that Trump’s other charges include willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, corruptly concealing documents or records and making false statements.
On Friday, Trump accused the Department of Justice of becoming weaponized in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.
“They ought to throw Deranged Jack Smith and his Thug Prosecutors in jail, with Meritless Garland and Trump Hating Lisa Monaco. They have totally Weaponized the Department of Injustice. Whatever happened to the Crooked Joe Biden Boxes Case?” Trump wrote. “Why was Hillary Clinton allowed to delete 33,000 emails, many of them Classified, AFTER getting a Subpoena from Congress? Why was Bill Clinton allowed to take tapes out of the W.H. in his socks? Why has no other President ever been charged? ELECTION FRAUD!”
Trump’s trial for the classified documents case will begin May 20, 2024, a federal judge said last week. U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida Judge Aileen Cannon ordered jury selection to take place on May 14 next year in Ft. Pierce, Fla., at the federal courthouse. The trial will start six days later at 9:30 a.m.
Trump previously decried the indictment on Truth Social, writing that this “isn’t America anymore.”
“….Biden had records for years, totally unsecured, even stolen when he was a Senator. This is crazy! Just like Jack Smith, Lisa Monaco, and the man they sent to the D.A.’s Office, Matt Colangelo. It isn’t America anymore. Under the Presidential Records Act, I’m allowed to do all this. Under the Clinton Socks Case, the decision is clear. There was no crime, except for what the DOJ and FBI have been doing against me for years,” he wrote.
This was a breaking news story. The details were periodically updated as more information became available.
