President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is distributing smart phones to illegal immigrants who cross the U.S.-Mexico border, video posted on Twitter shows.

Independent journalist Tayler Hansen tweeted video of illegal immigrants with their new cell phones on Friday, which they reportedly received from the DHS after being processed and assigned court dates.

“Brownsville, TX: Migrants open their DHS packets and use their government issued cell phones after being processed and receiving court dates. Some migrants have shown me that their court dates are as far out as 2027,” Hansen tweeted.

Last year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) admitted smartphones issued to illegal immigrants under the “Alternatives to Detention Program” were costing American taxpayers $361,218.08 per day, ABC News 4 reported.

Jon Feere, director of investigations at the Center for Immigration Studies and a former DHS senior advisor, called the program a “costly failure” last year.

“The Alternatives to Detention program has already proven to be a costly failure with thousands of aliens disappearing from monitoring every year, and there’s no reason to think this will be any different,” Feere told the Washington Free Beacon at the time. “The goal should be to quickly determine whether these individuals have a valid case, and if not, to quickly deport them. Instead, DHS is developing a massive social services program that will benefit NGOs with no guarantee any of these individuals will actually return home when ordered to do so.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection did not immediately respond to American Military News’ request for comment.
