Washington State will likely join nine other states in banning the sale of AR-15 rifles, as well as other “assault weapons,” after the state House passed an “assault weapons” sales ban by a vote of 56-42.

Gov. Jay Inslee praised the bill’s passage on Wednesday, tweeting, “WA does not and will not accept gun violence as normal.”

“Banning the sale of assault weapons, our bill to enact training requirements and a wait period, and the bill to improve accountability of manufacturers and retailers will save lives. #waleg,” he added.

The bill bans the sale, manufacture and importation of the aforementioned “assault weapons.” Exceptions were included in the bill for law enforcement and military personnel.

Earlier this month, Inslee called the “assault weapons” ban a “momentous step forward for Washington state.”

“Time and again we’ve seen the carnage these weapons allow people to unleash on communities. Time and again we’ve watched the NRA and politicians defend, normalize and even celebrate these weapons. But now the time is here when the majority’s will prevails and we put the lives of our children first,” he added in a statement.

In addition to banning “assault weapons,” lawmakers in Washington State also passed legislation imposing a 10-day waiting period on gun purchases and a firearms safety training requirement to buy a firearm.

While lawmakers in 10 states work to restrict Second Amendment rights, 26 other states have enacted “constitutional carry” laws, which allow Americans to carry concealed guns without a permit.

Nebraska is the latest state to pass constitutional carry legislation, which Gov. Jim Pillen has said he will sign into law.
