Hunter Biden’s lawyers have called for allies of former President Donald Trump to be investigated, alleging they trafficked information stolen from his laptop.
The move could mark a new phase in the public life of President Joe Biden’s embattled son, who has kept a low profile since scandalous material from his laptop began making headlines in 2020.
NBC News reported that Hunter Biden’s lawyers have sent letters to the Justice Department and Delaware attorney general’s office accusing Trump allies, including his former lawyer Rudy Giuliani, of theft and requesting they be investigated.
An anonymous source familiar with Hunter Biden’s strategy told NBC the letters represent a shift in the first son’s attitude.
“This marks a new approach by Hunter Biden and his team. He is not going to sit quietly by as questionable characters continue to violate his rights and media organizations peddling in lies try to defame him,” the source said.
The laptop, reportedly abandoned at a computer repair shop, had been obtained by Giuliani and shared with the New York Post ahead of the 2020 election. The laptop contains emails that allegedly link the Bidens to illegal overseas business dealings, as well as vivid photos depicting Hunter Biden’s drug abuse and sexual activity.
NBC reported that one of the letters asked the Justice Department’s National Security Division to investigate Giuliani and others who may have “violated various federal laws in accessing, copying, manipulating, and/or disseminating Mr. Biden’s personal computer data.”
One letter also accused John Paul Mac Isaac, the Delaware computer repair store owner who said Hunter Biden abandoned the laptop there, of “theft of computer services.” Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon is also named for having “accessed the hard drive’s contents at different points, without authorization from the owner,” according to NBC.
The news came as anonymous sources also suggested a cash-strapped Hunter Biden could soon set-up a legal defense fund to raise money for his attorneys’ fees. On top of existing legal troubles, he is facing new investigations from Republicans in Congress, partially regarding material from the laptop.
