“Top Gun: Maverick” has earned six Academy Award nominations, including for Best Picture, after bringing in nearly $1.5 billion worldwide.

The Tom Cruise-led action blockbuster is an Oscar candidate for Best Picture, Best Film Editing, Best Original Song, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay).

Cruise is named in the Best Picture nomination for his work as a producer on the “Top Gun: Maverick,” which is his first Oscar nomination in 23 years. The 60-year-old has earned three prior Oscar nominations, but never won in any category.

“Top Gun: Maverick” was nominated for two Golden Globe awards earlier this month: Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Original Song. It didn’t win in either category.

The film won none of the four categories it was nominated for in the British Academy Film Awards, but it was named the best film of the year by the National Board of Review, a long-running film enthusiast organization. And for his work as a producer, Cruise earned the Producers Guild of America’s highest honor last year.

The highly-anticipated sequel to the 1986 original, “Top Gun,” became the highest-grossing film of 2022 worldwide, Forbes reported, and was widely praised by critics and audiences. Its $126 million opening weekend was Cruise’s best ever in the U.S., according to Forbes.

The original “Top Gun” won an Oscar for Best Original Song. It had also been nominated for Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Sound Effects Editing.

Cruise, known for his stunt work, recently filmed himself jumping from a helicopter to thank “Top Gun: Maverick” fans while filming “Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning.”

“Thank you for allowing us to entertain you,” he said in the video. “It truly is the honor of a lifetime.”
