A shooter was killed by police officers after opening fire at a Target store in Omaha, Nebraska midday Tuesday. The Omaha Police Department announced that it wasn’t aware of any victims at the store or any local hospitals about two hours later.

Police were alerted to the active shooting just before noon, the Omaha World-Herald reported. The first responding officers confronted the shooter and killed him.

The shooter was a white male in his 30s with “plenty of ammunition,” according to Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer. The World-Herald reported that he had an AR-15 rifle, and that officials believe he entered through a front entrance.

The situation was deemed secure at 12:52 p.m., the World-Herald reported. By 1:45 p.m., there were still several police cruisers at the store but law enforcement presence had decreased.

Schmaderer said the shooter fired multiple rounds, but it wasn’t clear how many or whether he fired at any people.

An anonymous woman told the World-Herald she was shopping in the toy department when she heard three gunshots.

“Everyone was in a panic,” she said, adding that she and about a dozen other people, including employees and customers, ran out the back door of the store. Some employees took refuge in a nearby Sleep Number store, according to the World-Herald.

Law enforcement swept the store at least two times looking for injured victims, but found none, the World-Herald reported.

The incident drew response from several agencies, including the OPD, FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, Nebraska State Patrol and Omaha Fire Department, according to the World-Herald.

“This is what you want,” Schmaderer said. “When you have an active shooter in your city, you want a massive response like this.”

This was a breaking news story. The details were periodically updated as more information became available.
