After the Jan. 6 committee recommended criminal charges against former President Donald Trump over the Capitol storming and efforts to reverse the 2020 election, he suggested the move will only make him “stronger.”
Trump took to his social media site Truth Social to unload on the House select committee investigating Jan. 6 after it unanimously voted Monday to recommend the Justice Department pursue four criminal charges against Trump and his associates.
“These folks don’t get it that when they come after me, people who love freedom rally around me,” Trump said. “It strengthens me. What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.”
The select committee of House representatives has been investigating the events of Jan. 6, when a mob of protesters broke into the Capitol building to stop the certification of President Joe Biden’s election.
After investigating for more than a year, the committee’s key finding, according to the New York Times, was that Trump “lit the fuse” for the Capitol storming. However, immediately before the storming, Trump told his supporters to “peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.” Trump has long denied responsibility for the storming, which spurred his second impeachment, and denounced the committee’s probe as a “witch hunt.”
In likely its final public meeting Monday, the committee urged DOJ to charge Trump with four crimes:
- Obstruction of an official proceeding;
- Conspiracy to defraud the United States;
- Conspiracy to make a false statement; and
- Inciting or assisting an insurrection.
It’s unclear whether the charges will be pursued. Since the vote, Trump has railed against the committee and his political opponents across multiple Truth Social posts.
“The Fake charges made by the highly partisan Unselect Committee of January 6th have already been submitted, prosecuted, and tried in the form of Impeachment Hoax # 2. I WON convincingly. Double Jeopardy anyone!” he posted.
He also highlighted recent revelations about the FBI’s involvement in suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story late in the 2020 election cycle as the latest evidence the election was “Rigged and Stolen.”
