One person was killed and a suspect was arrested Monday in a shooting at the U.S. Army’s Fort Stewart post in Georgia, the base announced.
The suspect has not been identified, and the victim’s name won’t be released until next-of-kin are notified, the base tweeted.
Law enforcement was dispatched at 9:57 a.m. to a reported possible shooting in the fort’s complex for the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, according to an earlier announcement.
That’s a gated area, separate from the main fort, where soldiers from the 2nd Brigade live and work, Stars and Stripes reported.
Law enforcement arrived seven minutes later, and emergency medical personnel arrived to treat one shooting victim, according to the base’s announcement.
The suspect was arrested by Fort Stewart law enforcement and handed over to U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division custody, the base tweeted.
The incident went public at 10:50 a.m. local time, when the base said that emergency services were on-site and a suspect was in custody after “what has been described as a shooting.”
