A man died after he jumped about 40 feet from a pier in California and was pulled to shore by surfers, officials said.

A 36-year-old woman and 44-year-old Fenton Dee III of Norwalk jumped from the Huntington Beach Pier around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, according to City of Huntington Beach spokesperson Jennifer Carey.

The woman returned to the shore uninjured, but surfers pulled Dee back to the beach, Carey said.

He was unresponsive and transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, she said.

Neither foul play nor suicide were factors in the man’s death, but the investigation is ongoing, Carey said.

The drop from the pier to the water is about 40 to 45 feet, she said.

Huntington Beach is about 40 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles.
