Congress comes to Valley Forge Military Academy

As people prepare for the upcoming midterm elections, two former congressional representatives visited Valley Forge Military Academy and College for the annual Congress to Campus event.

Democrat Loretta Sanchez, who represented the 46th and 47th districts of California in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1997-2017, and Republican Robert William Goodlatte, who represented the 6th district of Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993-2019, spoke to cadets at the college and the academy during the two-day program.

At the College level, they discussed Constitutional Law/Introduction to Political Science, how the congressional process works, congressional rules, and described a day in the life of a congressman. With many cadets expected to serve in the U.S. Army or National Guard, they discussed military history, making of military policy and military oversight in Congress.

At the Academy, they discussed American government, what Congress does, its roles and responsibilities, and personal stories of congressional elections and service.

The program is done in collaboration with the Association of Former Members of Congress, a bipartisan, nonprofit, voluntary alliance of former United States Senators and Representatives which seeks to deepen the understanding of the democratic system, domestically and internationally, and to engage the citizenry through civic education about Congress and public service.
