Someone broke into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home in San Francisco early on Friday morning and assaulted her husband, Paul Pelosi.
A spokesperson for the FBI’s San Francisco field office told American Military News. “The FBI San Francisco is currently at the residence of Nancy Pelosi following an early morning break -in. A male subject is in custody.”
The FBI person could not provide any additional details about the investigation at this time.
In a late Friday morning press briefing, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said officers responded to a call at Pelosi’s home at around 2:27 a.m. Scott said officers saw Paul Pelosi and a male suspect both holding onto a hammer before the suspect pulled the hammer away and struck Paul Pelosi with it.
Scott said officers immediately tackled the suspect whom they identified as 42-year-old David Depape. Scott said Paul Pelosi and Depape were both transported to a hospital after the incident.
Scott said Depape’s motive is unclear at this time. Scott said would be booked at the San Francisco County Jail on charges of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary and “several other additional felonies.”
In a press statement earlier on Friday morning, Pelosi Spokesman Drew Hammill said, “Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi. The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation.”
While law enforcement officials have not yet publicly revealed the nature of Paul Pelosi’s injuries, unnamed law enforcement sources told CNN he was attacked with a hammer.
Hammill said Paul Pelosi, who is 82, was hospitalized and is receiving “excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery.”
“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time,” Hammill said.
On Friday morning the U.S. Capitol Police said it was working with the FBI and the San Francisco Police in a joint investigation of the attack. They said Speaker Pelosi was with her protective detail in Washington D.C. at the time of the attack.
Paul Pelosi runs a San Francisco-based real estate and venture capital investment firm.
Paul Pelosi was arrested earlier this year and charged with driving under the influence in California.
This article’s headline initially read “Pelosi’s husband violently attacked in San Fran home break-in, her office says” as law enforcement did not initially respond to requests for comment and all available information came from Pelosi’s office. The headline has since been updated to reflect law enforcement’s corroboration of the incident directly to American Military News.
