On Thursday, the U.S. House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 storming of the U.S. Capitol issued a subpoena for former President Donald Trump to testify.
The committee voted unanimously to subpoena the former president after Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) brought the motion, Fox News reported.
“We must seek the testimony under oath of January 6th’s key player,” Cheney said. “We are obligated to seek answers directly from the man who set this all in motion. Every American is entitled to those answers so we can act now to protect our republic.”
Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) said the committee has an “obligation” to compel Trump’s testimony.
“This is a question about accountability to the American people. He must be accountable. He is required to answer for his actions,” Thompson said, adding that the move is a “serious and extraordinary action.”
Earlier this year, Cheney claimed Trump “assembled the mob” that “attack[ed]” the Capitol last year. The congresswoman also turned on other members of her own party, accusing them of “dishonor” for supposedly “defending the indefensible.”
“On this point, there is no room for debate,” she continued. “Those who invaded our Capitol and battled law enforcement for hours were motivated by what President Trump had told them: That the election was stolen, and that he was the rightful president. President Trump summoned the mob, assembled the mob and lit the flame of this attack.”
Trump has repeatedly criticized the committee, slamming its members as “political thugs” and “corrupt politicians.”
“The Unselect Committee of political Thugs, essentially the same group who brought you the now fully debunked and discredited RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA HOAX (and many others!), refused to study and report on the massive amount of irrefutable evidence, much of it recently produced, that shows the 2020 Presidential Election was Rigged and Stolen,” Trump wrote on Truth Social in June.
“They want NOTHING to do with that topic because they cannot win on the facts. CANCEL & DENY, call it ‘THE BIG LIE,’ is all they can do. Corrupt Politicians!”
