Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) warned Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas this week that he will likely face impeachment for a “gross dereliction of duty” that has allowed millions of illegal immigrants to cross the US-Mexico border this year.

In a letter to Mayorkas obtained by Fox News Digital, the two Republican senators highlighted the staggering number of illegal immigrants that have crossed the southern border since Mayorkas took office.

“Since you assumed office as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) 19 months ago, there have been over 4.4 million illegal crossings, including over 3.5 million apprehensions by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)1 and at least 900,000 gotaways, who evaded apprehension,” the letter stated.

“This is gross dereliction of duty and, if not corrected swiftly, could provide grounds for Impeachment,” the senators warned. “We fully expect that in a few months’ time a Republican-led Congress will hold you to account for your willful negligence regarding the security of the southern border and the safety of the American people. We ask that you provide a full accounting of what DHS will do to achieve operational control of the southern border, as it is required to do by law, and stop the flow of illegal aliens and illicit drugs into the United States. Lives are depending on it.”

More than 2 million illegal immigrants have been apprehended at the US-Mexico border so far this year, shattering last year’s all-time record, the latest U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data shows. CBP’s data is current through August of this year and does not show the last full month before the fiscal year ended on Sept. 30.

Vice President Kamala Harris has insisted that the U.S.-Mexico border is secure despite the record-breaking number of illegal immigrants entering the U.S.

“We have a secure border in that that is a priority for any nation, including ours and our administration. But there are still a lot of problems that we are trying to fix given the deterioration that happened over the last four years,” Harris said.
