During an interview on Tuesday, Democrat Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH) said the country needs to “kill and confront” what he called a movement of “extremist” Republicans.

Ryan made the comments while appearing for an interview with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program on Tuesday morning.
“The Democrats aren’t right on everything and I’m willing to sit down and have conversations about how we can move out of this age of stupidity,” Ryan said during the interview.
Ryan said some of the answers to the problems America faces today “will come from Republicans” before stipulating “not the extremists that we are dealing with every single day, we’ve got to kill and confront that movement.”
“But working with normal mainstream Republicans,” Ryan continued, “that’s going to be really really important.”
Ryan’s comments about having to “kill and confront” the extreme Republican movement went viral, with clips of his remarks being viewed tens of thousands of times across various social media accounts on Tuesday.
Ryan’s comments come just days after President Joe Biden gave a politically charged presidential address from Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During the speech, Biden repeatedly attacked former President Donald Trump and “MAGA Republicans,” calling them a “threat to this county” a “threat to our personal rights” and a “threat to American democracy.” During that speech, Biden also decried political violence, though he exclusively cited examples from the political right.
Many social media users reacting to the clip of Ryan’s comments on Tuesday mocked the Democrat’s condemnations of extremism.
“They decry ‘extremist language’ only to use it ad nauseum themselves,” one Twitter user said.
“How about they start with defining what is so extreme?” said one Twitter user, to which another replied, “It’s anyone who disagrees with them.”
After his MSNBC appearance on Monday, Ryan tweeted, “Extremist politicians are introducing a national abortion ban today. They want to take away women’s freedoms and throw women and doctors in jail. We knew this day was coming. We can’t let them get away with this.”
Ryan’s tweet appears to reference legislation being brought forward by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) that would ban abortions nationwide after 15 weeks of gestation.
