San Diego police arrested a 32-year-old man Friday afternoon on suspicion of stealing a Humvee from a local military base Thursday afternoon.

Naval Amphibious Base Coronado officials confirmed in a statement to Fox 5 San Diego Friday that the vehicle was stolen from its Naval Special Warfare Command location, part of its Silver Strand Training Complex, on Thursday. The location is well-known for its use as a training and operations location for the U.S. Navy Seals.

San Diego police said in a statement that officers located the stolen vehicle at about 2:45 p.m. Friday on Saturn Boulevard near Palm Avenue in the community of Egger Highlands.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the suspect took off, police said, causing a chase that ended about one mile to the southeast at Faivre and 27th streets.

Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of auto theft, failing to yield and on an active felony warrant.

The suspect, speaking to OnScene TV after the arrest, said that he passed through gates on the base to take the Humvee, saying that he is a government contractor and a former U.S. Marine, a statement which could not be immediately verified.
