“Top Gun: Maverick” is on top.

The high-flying action sequel starring Tom Cruise on Tuesday became the year’s highest-grossing movie in North America, where it has made more than $400 million.

Its domestic total stood at $401 million as of Wednesday morning, and it’s grossed more than $755 million worldwide.

“Top Gun: Maverick” moved past Marvel’s superhero sorcerer spectacular “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which has made $398 million in North America. “Doctor Strange” remains ahead at the global box office, having made more than $931 million worldwide.

Serving as a long-awaited follow up to 1986′s classic “Top Gun,” the sequel features the return of Cruise’s hotshot Navy pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who must now train a new generation of aviators.

“Top Gun: Maverick” boasts a 97% approval ratings among critics included on the Rotten Tomatoes movie reviews website, while 99% of audience members viewed the film favorably.

The movie, which came out May 27, also stars Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro and Lewis Pullman as the new pilots.

“Top Gun: Maverick” won the domestic box office during its first two weekends in theaters. It came in second last weekend behind “Jurassic World Dominion,” which was new to theaters.

The only movie to make more domestically than “Top Gun” Maverick” since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic is “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which made more than $804 million after its release last December.

High-profile upcoming releases include the “Toy Story” spinoff “Lightyear,” out Friday; the Elvis Presley biopic “Elvis,” out June 24; the animated “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” out July 1; and Marvel’s “Thor: Love and Thunder,” out July 8.
