Plans are in place to build a $1 billion patriotic theme park in Maine that would contain the world’s tallest flagpole, Fox News has reported. The park’s purpose? To heal a divided nation.
“Everyone feels the division we’re all experiencing right now,” Rob Worcester, managing director of the Flagpole of Freedom Park, told Fox. “We hope this creates an opportunity for Americans to come together.”
Proposed by the family responsible for creating Wreaths Across America — a national non-profit which lays hundreds of thousands of wreaths on veterans’ graves annually — the park, which is planned for Columbia Falls, Maine, will feature a 1,461 foot flagpole that equals the height of One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the nation.
Placed on top of a hill 315 feet above sea level, the flag will reach 1,776 feet in height and carry an American flag larger than a football field, measuring 360 feet long by 208 feet wide.
Additional highlights of the park include an observation deck atop of the flagpole, Fox reports, offering 360-degree views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Pine Tree State’s dense forests. A 900-foot long Disney-style Main Street is also being planned, featuring shops, eateries and entertainment, as are several walls of remembrance honoring the 24 million Americans who have served in the military throughout the nation’s history.
A second 450-feet-tall flagpole displaying the POW/MIA flag will pay tribute to the 93,500 American servicemen and women whose fates remain unknown.
“Flagpole of Freedom Park will be the most significant patriotic destination in the country,” reads a statement from the project’s founders. “Part national monument, part historical adventure, part immersive tech-driven museum and part architectural wonder, this is a destination where we can all come together as simply Americans.”
The entire project will be 100% privately funded, Worcester told Fox, admitting that the proposed first phase will cost approximately $1 billion.
He is currently seeking donations to make the park a reality.
Flagpole of Freedom Park offers a “much-needed paradigm” shift in America, said project spokesman Vann Morris, a U.S. Navy combat veteran and orator known as “The Voice of Old Glory” for his rousing tributes to the American flag.
“People need to understand that the flag represents all Americans, every single one of us,” Morris told Fox. “It’s not a political statement. It’s a symbol of unity. It’s about healing America.”
The plan is to break ground in 2023 and open the first phase of the park on July 4, 2026, the nation’s 250th birthday.
