A 25-year-old Washtenaw County man was arrested Wednesday morning for jumping over the security fence at Selfridge Air National Guard Base and wandering around with an unloaded firearm, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Renee Yax confirmed sheriff’s deputies were called to the main entrance of the Harrison Township military base at Rosso Memorial Highway and Jefferson Avenue about 6 a.m. for a trespassing complaint.

When they arrived, deputies were greeted by military personnel who turned over the Ypsilanti resident.

“The male was uninjured, intoxicated, and in possession of an unloaded firearm with no magazine that was registered to him.” Yax said in a news release.

The suspect told investigators he had been a passenger in a vehicle but had gotten into an argument with the driver, so he got out and began walking.

Yax said the Ypsilanti man was unfamiliar with his surroundings, but saw lights at Selfridge.

“He hopped the fence in attempt to find shelter and was located by Selfridge security,” she said in the release.

The male is being held at the Macomb County Jail on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and trespassing. A report will be presented to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office for formal charges.

Ypsilanti is near Ann Arbor, about 55 miles from Harrison Township. The sheriff’s release did not indicate why the man was in Macomb County.
