The House select committee investigating the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, will ask Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, to testify on her involvement in then-President Donald Trump’s challenges to the 2020 presidential election results, according to committee chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) this week.
“We think it’s time that we, at some point, invite her [Ginni Thomas] to come talk to the committee,” Thompson told reporters on Thursday, adding that the emails might come up during the hearings “at some point” but that they were still in the “discovery phased,” Politico reported.
Thompson said that the committee has not yet decided to subpoena Thomas if she refuses to testify.
“Well, we’ll see what happens. And we’ll go from there,” he added.
The plan to invite Thomas to testify comes after the committee reportedly obtained emails between her and Trump lawyer John Eastman, CNBC reported on Thursday.
On Thursday, Thomas told the Daily Caller that she is looking forward to clearing up “misconceptions” related to Jan. 6, 2021.
“I can’t wait to clear up misconceptions. I look forward to talking to them,” Thomas said, indicating that she would agree to testify before the committee.
While it is unclear exactly what is in the emails, the New York Times reported earlier this year that Thomas sent numerous texts to Trump White House officials allegedly pushing for the 2020 election to be overturned.
In one of the texts sent just days after the election, Thomas pressed Mark Meadows, Trump’s chief of staff, to “release the Kraken and save us from the left taking America down.”
“I can’t see Americans swallowing the obvious fraud. Just going with one more thing with no frickin consequences,” she said in a separate message, adding, “We just cave to people wanting Biden to be anointed? Many of us can’t continue the GOP charade.”
Last week, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), vice chairwoman of the committee, alleged that former President Trump “assembled the mob” that “attack[ed]” the Capitol last year. The Republican congresswoman also turned on other members of her own party, accusing them of “dishonor” for supposedly “defending the indefensible.”
Trump responded to the committee on his social media platform Truth Social, slamming committee members as “political thugs” and “corrupt politicians.”
“The Unselect Committee of political Thugs, essentially the same group who brought you the now fully debunked and discredited RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA HOAX (and many others!), refused to study and report on the massive amount of irrefutable evidence, much of it recently produced, that shows the 2020 Presidential Election was Rigged and Stolen,” Trump posted.
