Authorities on Thursday announced a $2,000 reward in the unsolved case of a 19-year-old Navy sailor who was fatally shot a Logan Heights house party in 2019.
LeMontee Stevenson — also known as Montee, according to an obituary — was killed Aug. 17, 2019. San Diego police said his friend had gotten into a fight with another man during the party at a house on Marcy Avenue near Kearney Avenue. When Stevenson tried to break up the fight, the unidentified man shot Stevenson multiple times, police said.
The shooter then ran away.
Stevenson was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Police at the time said Stevenson had gotten into an altercation — not that he had tried to break up a fight.
Stevenson was from Akron, Ohio, where he was a standout football player in high school, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.
“You can’t find one person who ever had an issue with LeMontee,” East High School football coach Marques Hayes told the newspaper in the days after Stevenson was killed. “I mean no suspensions, no detentions, no anything like that. Just a fun loving guy, a fun loving spirit, you know — always smiling.”
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Stevenson’s death came a little more than two years after his 24-year-old brother, LeMichael Stevenson, was fatally shot outside his home in Akron.
San Diego police asked anyone who attended the Logan Heights party or anyone with information about the case to contact homicide detectives at (619) 531-2293 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477.
Crime Stoppers contributed $1,000 and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service provided another $1,000 for a total reward of $2,000 to solve the case.
