Two people suffered life-threatening injuries Thursday morning when a dump truck veered onto the shoulder of Interstate 77 and hit an Ohio Department of Transportation vehicle, with both bursting into flames.
A news release from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office says the crash occurred at about 7:20 a.m. on I-77 near Graybill Road. Video of the crash shows the ODOT vehicle was parked on the side of the highway when the dump truck begins to swerve over and hits the ODOT vehicle from behind.
The collision caused an explosion as both vehicles were pushed off the right side of the highway into a grassy area. The drivers of both vehicles were taken to a hospital. A statement from ODOT Akron says the driver’s injuries are not life-threatening.
The crash caused traffic on the interstate to back up to Ohio 30 in Canton, according to the sheriff’s office. The crash remains under investigation.
This is the 82nd ODOT crew struck this year, according to ODOT Akron.
