The family of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was fatally shot by Alec Baldwin on the set of the movie “Rust,” has sued the actor and the film’s producers.
The wrongful death suit was filed in Santa Fe, N.M., by Matthew Hutchins, Halyna Hutchins’ widowed husband, and her 9-year-old son Andros Hutchins. The suit alleges that Baldwin acted recklessly and, because of cost-cutting, the production failed to follow industry standards for gun safety, which resulted in her death.
Hutchins was shot and killed on Oct. 21 while prepping for a scene. The film’s director Joel Souza was also struck. Hutchins was airlifted to a hospital where she died.
“It never should have happened,” Brian Panish, who represents Hutchins’ estate, said at a press conference.
Randi McGinn, the estate’s attorney in Albuquerque, was even more forceful in condemning Baldwin and the producers.
“We’re used to people coming in from out of town to play cowboy who don’t know how to use guns,” McGinn said. “You don’t hand somebody a gun until you give them safety training… No one should ever die with a real gun on a make-believe movie set.”
The suit lists as defendants Baldwin, Ryan Smith, Allen Cheney, Nathan Klingher, Ryan Winterstern, Anjul Nigam, Matthew DelPiano, and Emily Salveson and crew members Sarah Zachry, Dave Halls, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, Gabrielle Pickle and Seth Kenney.
