At least one bullet was accidentally discharged Saturday afternoon at Atlanta’s Hartfield-Jackson airport, the world’s busiest.
The accidental shot was fired near the main security checkpoint, Atlanta police said. No one was injured.
The gunshot sent people scrambling and panicked about an active shooter on a major travel day. The TSA screened 2.2 million passengers Friday, the most in a single day since the pandemic began, according to CNN.
Flights were grounded and normal procedures stopped entirely as people scrambled to find cover, CNN reported.
Photos posted to social media showed some passengers milling around on the tarmac.
Police did not reveal how the gun went off or who it belonged to. The incident remains under investigation.
The gun went off around 1:30 p.m. and the airport resumed normal operations around 3:30 p.m.
