An off-duty NYPD officer died in an apparent suicide on Long Island Monday, police sources said.
The 9-year NYPD veteran assigned to Transit District 20 in Queens was found dead in a car at the Mastic Beach Marina in Mastic Beach about 5:40 p.m. from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, sources said.
In a statement late Monday, Suffolk County police described the death as “non-criminal. His name was not released.
The death is believed to be the fourth NYPD suicide year. On Sept. 7, a veteran NYPD officer killed himself inside his 74th St. home in Glendale.
This past April saw two NYPD suicides: Officer Rory Dahill, 34, shot himself in his Stuyvesant Town apartment in Manhattan April 28, and Deputy Inspector Denis Mullaney, 44, who commanded the 107th Precinct, shot himself in his department vehicle across from Kissena Park on April 5.
The city saw a rise in police suicides in 2019 and 2020, leading the NYPD to step up its mental health outreach for cops in distress.
In 2019, the department ordered its officers to complete a mandatory suicide prevention training course.
