A drive-by birthday caravan is planned for Dec. 4 to celebrate Tuskegee Airman James Clayton Flowers’ 106th birthday.

The Buffalo Soldier Motorcycle Club in El Paso organized this caravan to honor Flowers whose actual birthday isn’t until Dec. 25. Flowers is one of Las Cruces’ oldest community members.

According to Debo Wakefield with the motorcycle club, the plan is for caravanners to line up in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter on Walton Boulevard at 1:30 p.m. that Saturday. Las Cruces police will then escort the caravan to Flowers’ home beginning at 2 p.m.

Flowers is one of the last surviving members of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first Black aviators who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the World War II era. They flew missions in Europe and North Africa during the war, serving as part of the motivation for the racial integration of the country’s military.

All are welcome to join the birthday celebration. If interested, contact Wakefield by phone at 915-861-5443.
