67 shot, 8 fatally during weekend that saw 2 mass shootings and 9 kids wounded in Chicago

Four people were shot, one fatally, early Monday in Humboldt Park — one of two mass shootings in a weekend that saw at least 67 people shot, eight of them fatally, according to Chicago police.

Among those shot were nine juveniles, a paramedic tending to a patient at Stroger Hospital and a 39-year-old woman sleeping in her bed in South Shore.

The most recent mass shooting happened in the 800 block of North Ridgeway Avenue in Humboldt Park around 1:40 a.m., officials said. Four people had been standing on the sidewalk when someone in a “dark-colored sedan” shot at them, police said.

A 34-year-old man was shot in the chest and he was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m., according to information from the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The agency had not released his name or age early Monday.

A 17-year-old boy was among three people who were all shot at least once in their right leg. The teen was taken to Stroger in good condition, police said. A man, 24, also was reported to be in good condition at Stroger and a 39-year-old man was in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

There was another mass shooting with six people wounded on Sunday in the 800 block of North Ridgeway Avenue in Lawndale, authorities said. A 27-year-old woman was in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to her pelvis. Three men and two women in their 20s and 30s were also taken to Mount Sinai, where their conditions were stabilized.

The youngest person shot this weekend, a 14-year-old boy, was in a vehicle exiting the expressway onto the 100 block of East 59th Street when he and a 39-year-old woman, also in the vehicle, were shot by someone in a dark-colored Audi Saturday around 2 p.m., police said. The boy was struck in the left forearm and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in good condition. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken to University of Chicago Hospital, also in good condition.

A 15-year-old boy was found on the ground in the 7200 block of South Jeffery Boulevard in South Shore Friday along with an 18-year-old around 10:50 p.m. The boy suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the legs, police said, and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in fair condition. The teenager with him suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his body and was pronounced dead after being taken to University of Chicago Hospital.

A man, 41, was standing on the sidewalk when someone in a gray sedan shot the man and a teen, around 10:50 p.m. Sunday in the 3400 block of West 23rd Street in Little Village, authorities said. The man took himself to Saint Anthony Hospital and was transferred to Mount Sinai where he was listed in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the torso, police said. A 16-year-old boy also suffered a graze wound to the leg and was listed in good condition at Mount Sinai, authorities said.

A 17-year-old boy and a 29-year-old man were leaving a house when they were shot at by someone in a gold Chevrolet Suburban around 1:40 a.m. Sunday in 2500 block of South Hamlin Avenue in Little Village. The man suffered a wound to his upper leg and was taken to Mount Sinai in serious condition, police said. The boy suffered a gunshot wound to his lower leg and was taken to Mount Sinai in good condition, authorities said.

Two 16-year-old boys were shot Saturday morning, authorities said. One suffered a gunshot wound to his heel while sitting in the back seat of a vehicle in the 4600 block of South Paulina Street in the Back of the Yards, police said. The other boy was taking out the garbage in the 5700 block of South Bishop Street in Englewood Sunday morning when he witnessed three people shooting at each other and suffered a graze wound to his hand.

In other shootings Sunday to Monday morning:

  • A 27-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk at 2:30 a.m. Monday when he suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand while leaving a party, police said. He was dropped off at Advocate Trinity Hospital and was listed in good condition, but did not say where the shooting occurred.
  • A 25-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk at 1:45 a.m. when he suffered a graze wound to his left leg, authorities said. He was dropped off at Humboldt Park Health and he did not say where the shooting occurred.
  • Two men had an argument over a card game in Gresham in the 700 block of West 77th Place Monday at 12:40 a.m., authorities said. One man, 38, pulled out a handgun and shot the other man, 35, multiple times, according to authorities. The 35-year-old died after being taken to the University of Chicago Hospital. The 38-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the left arm and was in good condition before being placed under arrest, authorities said.
  • A teenager, 18, was shot in the torso at 10:10 p.m. Sunday in the 4500 block of West Jackson Boulevard in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, authorities said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. Police say the shooter was in a dark-colored sedan.
  • A 31-year-old man was sitting on a front porch in the 3700 block of South Princeton Avenue in Wentworth Gardens when a man approached and shot him in the torso around 10:50 p.m., police said. He was taken to University of Chicago Hospital and listed in serious condition.
  • A man, 36, was fatally shot walking down the sidewalk in the first block of East 71st Street at 9:05 p.m., police said.
  • A 25-year-old man took himself to Rush University Medical Center after suffering a graze wound to the neck in the 300 block of South Kilpatrick Avenue in the West Garfield Park neighborhood around 8:15 p.m. police said. He was listed in good condition.
  • Authorities said a man, 24, was standing in an alley when he was shot in the left leg around 9:45 p.m. in the 1100 block of North Austin Boulevard in South Austin, not far from the Oak Park city limits. He took himself to West Suburban Medical Center where he was listed in fair condition.
  • A 38-year-old man was walking in the first block of East Marquette Road at 9:10 p.m. when he was shot in the left foot, police said. He was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in fair condition.
  • A teenager, 17, was taken to Stroger in fair condition with a gunshot wound to his left leg after being shot around 8:15 p.m. in the 3300 block of West Roosevelt Road in Homan Square, police said.
  • A man, 26, was approached by an unknown person who demanded the 26-year-old’s property at around 3:20 p.m. in the 700 block of South Spaulding Avenue in Homan Square, police said. The person then took out a gun and shot the man in the left buttocks. He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
  • A 24-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the head in the first block of North Long Avenue, authorities said. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center where he was in critical condition, police said.
  • A 52-year-old woman was driving in the 1200 block of North Long Avenue in the North Austin neighborhood when she suffered a gunshot wound to her back around 12:15 p.m., police said. She was taken to West Suburban Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 12:25 p.m. She had not been identified by the medical examiner’s office Monday.
  • In the 9400 block of South Vincennes Avenue in Brainerd around 12:45 p.m., a 17-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to his right arm, police said. He was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in good condition.
  • A man, 22, was shot in the chest and right leg while standing next to a vehicle around noon in the 800 block of North St. Louis Avenue in Humboldt Park, authorities said. He was taken to Mount Sinai and listed in critical condition, police said.
