Two boys forced to steer SUV off Texas freeway after father was fatally shot while driving
Two young brothers steered an SUV to safety off a Houston freeway after their father was fatally shot while driving Friday night, according to the Houston Police Department.
The boys, 8 and 6, told police they avoided a crash or further disaster by maneuvering the steering wheel of the white Toyota Sequoia to pull off onto a service road around 10:45 p.m. Friday, Houston Police Department Public Information Officer John Cannon told USA TODAY. They said the fatal gunshot sounded like a rock hitting the car at first, and then they saw their father immediately slump in the seat. It was unclear how fast the vehicle was going on the freeway.
The boys’ father, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene from a single gunshot wound to the head, according to police. Neither of the brothers was injured, and they found a woman at a nearby Chili’s restaurant in a strip mall to call 911.
Cannon told USA TODAY there were no suspects and the motive remained unclear. He said the Houston Police Homicide Department opened an official investigation and will interview potential anonymous witnesses. Police also plan to review video camera footage.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner announced Sunday on social media that anyone with information that leads to an arrest in the shooting could receive a $10,000 reward.
