A small plane made an emergency landing on a freeway near San Diego on Tuesday, clipping several vehicles and jamming traffic for hours.
The landing occurred after noon on Interstate 5 near Del Mar, about 20 miles north of San Diego, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and the California Highway Patrol. Jose Ysea, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, told the Times of San Diego that the aircraft “clipped” several vehicles before hitting and stopping at a center-divider wall.
According to KSWB, one of the plane’s wings was lodged in the back of a car.
A woman who said her car was hit by the plane told KSWB she saw glass shattering as the plane appeared suddenly.
The plane’s pilot and another occupant were uninjured, Ysea said, but two people from vehicles were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The cause of the plane’s emergency landing is under investigation.
The incident resulted in the southbound lane of the freeway being closed, the fire department tweeted. Traffic was at a standstill as drivers were told to avoid the freeway for more than an hour.
