Police in Forth Worth, Texas said a gathering of people at a local residence fought back against a gunman who began firing at them early Monday morning. When police responded, they found gunman dead at the scene after having been struck with landscaping bricks.

In a tweeted statement, the Forth Worth Police Department said the gunman was at a small backyard gathering on the 5600 Block of Shiloh Drive. After an argument, the gunman reportedly left the party and again returned before becoming involved in a verbal altercation before opening fire.

Police said the gunman shot at least one victim, causing non-life-threatening injuries before the other attendees at the gathering gave chase.

“A group picked up concrete landscaping bricks and began ‘throwing them’ at the shooter,” Fort Worth Police said. “At some point, the shooter was caught by the group and either fell or was taken to the ground.”

Once on the ground, the gunman reportedly continued firing, striking at least two additional attendees. One victim, police said, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was transported to a hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot injury.

Police said the gunman was “struck multiple times” with “at least one landscaping brick” and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fort Worth Police Department officer Tracy Carter told Fox 4 News, the attendee either caught the gunman “or he fell to the ground and at that time, he lost his life, what we believe, by stones. The [medical examiner] is going to have to determine that.”

The incident remains under investigation.

Forth Worth Police said the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death for the deceased.

Fort Worth police said three “suspects” involved in the incident were transported to an area hospital for medical treatment. Homicide detectives are reportedly continuing to interview all of the attendees of the backyard gathering that were involved in the incident.

Police are not releasing the identities of the injured attendees.
