Cleveland’s Major League Baseball club is changing its name from Indians to Guardians.
The announcement came in a 2-minute video posted on the team’s Twitter account, and narrated by former Cleveland resident Tom Hanks:
Cleveland has gone by Indians since 1915, though that name has come under fire in recent years because many believe it is insensitive to Native Americans. In 2020, team ownership announced they would change the name, with the goal of having it in place by 2022.
Cleveland is the second major U.S. professional sports franchise to change its name from a Native American moniker in recent years. The NFL’s Washington Redskins retired their name and logo in late 2019 and have gone by “Washington Football Team” since the beginning of the 2020 season.
