A gun was seized from a Florida man’s carry-on bag Tuesday at Syracuse Hancock International Airport, the TSA said.

TSA officers found the 9 mm handgun after running the man’s bag through an X-ray machine at the airport’s checkpoint, a Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman said in a news release Wednesday. Although the gun was not loaded, a magazine with seven bullets was also found in the man’s bag, she said.

The man told officials he’d inherited the gun and forgot he had it with him, she said.

The Syracuse Police Department responded to the airport and confiscated the gun.

It was not clear if the Florida man — whose name was not released — was arrested. But the TSA spokeswoman said the man faces paying thousands of dollars worth of civil penalties for bringing the gun into an airport checkpoint.

So far this year, two guns have been seized at the airport checkpoint, TSA officials said. Four were found last year.
