Over the course of one year, Jon Rhattigan went from being an unheralded backup linebacker for Army to the team’s most valuable player and an undrafted free agent for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.

Rhattigan, from Naperville, Illinois, was signed by the Seahawks following the conclusion of the NFL Draft on Saturday evening. A February SB Nation report had Rhattigan in discussions with the Seahawks, Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles prior to the draft.

Rhattigan’s ability to train with the Seahawks will have to be approved by The Pentagon. Changes in recent years have allowed service academy graduates to train and play with pro teams, putting a pause on their required commitments to the active military.

Rhattigan earned a lot of exposure this season on an Army team that went 9-2 in the regular season and claimed the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy with wins over Navy and Air Force. The Black Knights lost to West Virginia in the Liberty Bowl, a game Rhattigan missed due to COVID protocols. Weeks later, Rhattigan was showcased for NFL and other pro scouts in the Hula Bowl.

Rhattigan tied with Arik Smith for Army’s team lead in tackles, both producing 33 unassisted stops and 45 assists. His 11 tackles against Texas San Antonio represented his career high. Rhattigan and Smith also tied for the lead in tackles for lost yardage, Rhattigan making nine stops for 40 yards. Rhattigan also produced two pass breakups, intercepted two passes and one-and-a-half sacks. He returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown against Middle Tennessee State, and also had a pick against Mercer.
