Charting through various developmental projects for enhancing Indian naval fleet operating capabilities and allowing the Indian Navy to be a worthy force with capable defensive and offensive elements, India’s premier defense research body unveiled the successful development of Advanced Chaff Technology on April 5.
Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has designed and developed an Advanced Chaff Technology to safeguard naval ships against enemy missile attacks. The project was carried out by Defense Laboratory Jodhpur (DLJ), a DRDO lab.
The project involved a series of indigenously developed variants of this critical technology, given as Short Range Chaff Rocket (SRCR), Medium-Range Chaff Rocket (MRCR) and Long Range Chaff Rocket (LRCR). This successful development of Advanced Chaff Technology by DLJ is another progressive step towards establishing self-reliance through the national initiative of Atmanirbhar Bharat pitched by PM Narendra Modi.
The successful development was announced after the Indian Navy effectively carried out trials of all three variants in the Arabian Sea over a selected Indian Naval Ship. The series of tests were successful and scientists found the performance satisfactory through their evaluation.
After years of research and exploration to develop critical state of art technologies, DRDO has attained serious momentum in grasping cutting-edge techs to counter the futuristic threats from adversaries. After the official unveiling, this new technology will put through a formal contract of manufacturing to the industry for production in large quantities and meet Indian Navy’s requirements at large scale.
Indian Defense Minister Singh congratulated DRDO with the Indian Navy and company involved in the project for the achievement. Secretary Department of Defence R&D & Acting Chairman DRDO Dr. G Satheesh Reddy also complimented the efforts of the teams that participated in the indigenous development of this important technology to protect Indian Naval Ships against enemy Anti Ship Missiles.
Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar has also hailed the DRDO achievement in developing the strategically important technology quickly and cleared for bulk production, according to the official statement.
Chaff is a passively chemical-based expendable electronic countermeasure technology used worldwide to protect naval ships from enemy radar tracking waves and Radio Frequency (RF) missile seekers to evade lock from the anti-ship missile.
In a clear statement, DRDOs new Chaff can be used in layers of protection seeing the three types of technology used in tandem launches to effectively avoid missile strikes.
