A U.S. Marshal was shot while serving a warrant against an individual wanted for armed robbery and attempted murder in Baltimore on Thursday.

According to the U.S. Marshals Twitter account, the officer was shot while serving the warrant with members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. The Marshal returned fired, killing the suspect.

“One deputy US Marshal was shot, transported to Shock Trauma with serious injuries and is recovering from surgery at this time. The suspect was shot and has been declared deceased,” US Marshals tweeted. We are gathering more details and will have further updates later.

The service said it is still gathering more details about the incident and will “release more information later.”

WBAL-TV reported that federal law enforcement and Baltimore Homicide units arrived on the scene following the shooting, as did Mayor Brandon Scott and Police Chief Michael Harrison.

Several blocks surrounding the incident were closed to traffic.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the deputy and his family during this tragic time,” U.S. Marshals tweeted.

The shooting comes just days after two FBI agents were killed and three others injured while serving a warrant in Florida. The suspect was also killed.

According to police, a man suspected of having child pornography had barricaded himself in his home, prompting law enforcement to shut down the surrounding area.

Police believe the man watched the agents approach via a doorbell camera, and fired at them through the door with a rifle. A law enforcement source said bullet holes were visible in the front door.

The slain agents were later identified as Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger, who had an extensive history investigating child pornography and sexual exploitation cases.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said on Tuesday, “Every day, FBI special agents put themselves in harm’s way to keep the American people safe. Special Agent Alfin and Special Agent Schwartzenberger exemplified heroism today in defense of their country. The FBI will always honor their ultimate sacrifice and will be forever grateful for their bravery. We continue to stand by our FBI Family, and the families of these special agents, in the days to come, bringing every resource we can to get through this together.”
