Sunday morning on the near northside, Indianapolis suffered what police are calling the most significant mass shooting the city has seen in more than a decade.
A total of six people, including a pregnant woman and her unborn child, were pronounced dead after being found in a home in the 3500 block of Adams Street, according to Sgt. Shane Foley of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Investigators were led to the grisly crime scene around 4 a.m., after making contact with a juvenile male who was found suffering from gunshot wounds just footsteps away in the 3300 block of East 36th Street.
It is believed that the young man was wounded in the Adams Street incident. If so, he is the only recorded survivor at this time. No motive or suspect information has been released.
Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and IMPD Chief Randal Taylor addressed the public in the wake of the tragedy Sunday afternoon from IMPD’s North District headquarters.
Hogsett spoke with passion, pain and frustration as he offered his remarks. He called the shooting “an act of depravity that has become all too common across the country.”
“This morning, one of more individuals perpetrated an act of evil in our city,” Hogsett said. “What happened this morning was not a simple act of gun violence … what happened this morning was a mass murder.”
Taylor called it the “largest mass casualty shooting” in the city “in more than a decade.”
“What we saw this morning was a different kind of evil,” he said.
“I’m angry that the perpetrators felt they had the right to commit this senseless act in our community,” Taylor said. “It has to stop. Our community doesn’t deserve this.”
Investigators believe the shooting to be a targeted incident that may involve multiple shooters, Taylor said.
Hogsett added that local police have the support of federal authorities on the case. .
“I want those to know that the full might of local, state and federal law enforcement are coming for them as I speak … coming for them as long as it takes,” he said.
The mass shooting on Adams Street was one of nearly a half dozen shootings that happened across the city in a span of less than five hours. In addition to the six killed, at least seven people were hospitalized.
