Attendees at a pro-Trump rally to protest the presidential election results breached the Capitol building Wednesday, forcing their way through several levels of security fencing during the “Save America” rally protesting Congress’s anticipated certification of Joe Biden as president-elect.
The Blaze reporter Elijah Schaffer shared video of a clash between protestors and federal police, tweeting, “Trump supporters have breached the Capitol building, tearing down 4 layers of security fencing and are attempting to occupy the building — fighting federal police who are overrun.”
“This is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Thousands, the police can’t stop them,” Schaffer added.
Another video from Washington Post reported Rebecca Tan showed attendees approaching the Capitol after allegedly overtaking barricades.
Another Twitter user shared a photo of the clash, tweeting, “Trump supporters are fighting cops at the U.S. Capitol. Pepper spray has come out. Trump recently ended his rally, which means there are presumably thousands more Trump supporters headed to the area.”
Also at the Capitol, reporters on the ground received alerts from Capitol Police urging reporters to evacuate the area due to “police activity.”
Vice President Mike Pence’s letter to Congress surfaced early Wednesday afternoon, in which he said he would not block Congress’ certification of electoral votes.
Earlier Wednesday, President Donald Trump told a massive crowd of his supporters that he would lead them in a march to the Capitol building to “cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women after his speech during the pro-Trump.
“That will be a sad day for our country because you’re sworn to uphold our Constitution. Now it is up to Congress to confront this egregious assault on our democracy,” Trump said. “And after this, we’re going to walk down…and I’ll be there with you…we’re going to walk down to the Capitol and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women and we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them.”
The president continued, “You’ll never take back our country with weakness, you have to show strength…you have to be strong. We have come to demand that Congress do the right thing and only count the electors who have been lawfully slated.”
