Iran has asked the international police organization Interpol for help in arresting U.S. President Donald Trump and 47 U.S. officials for their role in the killing of Qasem Soleimani early last year.

Iranian judiciary spokesperson Gholamhossein Esmaili announced the “Red Notice” request for Trump’s arrest issued through Interpol during a press conference on Tuesday. A Red Notice is an appeal to law enforcement in other countries through Interpol, requesting help in locating and arresting someone faced with extradition, surrender or “similar legal action.” It is an international wanted persons notice, not an arrest warrant, Interpol’s website stated.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is very seriously following up on pursuing and punishing those who ordered and executed this crime,” Esmaili told reporters, Al Jazeera reported.

The request also included 47 other U.S. officials who contributed to the mission that led to Soleimani’s death.

Soleimani was a top Iranian general who had led the foreign operations arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He was assassinated in a U.S. drone strike ordered by President Trump on Jan. 3, 2020.

Agnes Callamard, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, determined the assassination went against international law.

In June 2020, Tehran prosecutor Ali Alqasimehr said Trump and dozens of U.S. officials face “murder and terrorism charges,” after issuing an arrest warrant. Interpol rejected the request, noting that the agency’s constitution prevents it from engaging in “any intervention or activities of a political, military, religious or racial character.”

The move comes just days after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Trump’s life “will end” and Iran would not rest until it gets revenge on the U.S. for the January airstrike that killed the top Iranian general in Baghdad, Iraq.

In translated remarks posted on the Iranian president’s official website, Rouhani said in reference to Trump, “One of the effects of this stupid and disgraceful act was that Trumpism ended and in a few days, the life of this criminal will end and he will go to the dustbin of history, and we are very happy about this and we believe that the period after Trump will be a better condition for regional and global stability.”

Rouhani added that Iran “will not give up until they take revenge on [Soleimani’s] blood as its right.”

“The martyrdom of Martyr Soleimani was revenge against the Islamic Republic of Iran, independence of regional countries and revenge against those great nations that stood against the conspiracies of the United States and Zionism and foiled that conspiracy,” Rouhani said.
