Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser ordered a citywide curfew on Wednesday as rioters stormed the Capitol building, forcing evacuations and lockdowns.
“Today, I’m ordering a citywide curfew for the District of Columbia from 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 7,” the mayor tweeted. Also in the tweet was an official statement from Bowser, noting that “during the hours of the curfew, no person, other than persons designated by the Mayor, shall walk, bike, run, loiter, stand, or motor by car or other mode of transport upon any street, alley, park, or other public place within the District.”Under the mayor’s order, the curfew will not apply to essential workers, including media with credentials, while “engaged in essential functions” including travel to and from work. The curfew comes amid the “Save America” pro-Trump rally that turned violent Wednesday, with rally attendees forcing their way into the Capitol building. The U.S. Capitol was put under lockdown after rioters managed to break into the building. A video from Twitter showed the “last audible words from the Senate feed” were “The protesters are in the building.”Today, I'm ordering a citywide curfew for the District of Columbia from 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 7. pic.twitter.com/lp6Pt3DcYC
