A 59-year-old woman shot her boyfriend to death on Christmas Eve as he held a tomahawk over his head while she was laying down, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
The woman told deputies she was lying in bed around 11:45 p.m. when her boyfriend, Troy Sorrell, 59, raised a tomahawk over his head, said Volusia County sheriff’s spokesman Andrew Gant. Fearing Sorrell was about to hit her with it, she grabbed a gun next to the bed and shot him, Gant said.
Deputies recovered the gun, shell casing and tomahawk, which had a 2-foot handle on it, from the home on San Jose Boulevard in Daytona Beach, according to Gant.
The woman is not being charged with a crime because it appears at this time she was acting in self-defense, Gant said. The incident remains under investigation.
She previously had an injunction against Sorrell from 2015 until January 2020 and called deputies in October after she saw him wearing a gun and military gear, Gant said.
