Azerbaijan forces accidentally shot down a Russian helicopter in Armenia on Monday, killing two Russian service members aboard.
The Russian Defense Ministry first confirmed the helicopter and its two service members were shot down while on a military convoy, the Associated Press reported.
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry later issued a statement admitting to accidentally shooting down the helicopter.
The incident occurred near the border of the autonomous Nakhchivan region near its border with Turkey. The shootdown occurred approximately 90 miles from a Russian military base in Armenia.

Armenian and Azerbaijani forces have been clashing for the past two months over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The region belongs to Azerbaijan by law, but has been controlled by Armenia since 1994.
