A man died Friday night after being run over by a Border Patrol agent’s vehicle in Calexico, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said Saturday.
The crash happened around 8:40 p.m. when an agent with the Calexico station was responding to a report of an illegal entry into the United States from Mexico, authorities said.
Officials said the agent was unable to avoid driving over the man, who they said was lying in the road. The agent rendered aid to the man until paramedics arrived.
The identity of the man and his nationality were not released.
The man was transported to a nearby hospital and then airlifted to a trauma center in Palm Springs, where he died.
The California Highway Patrol and the Border Patrol’s Office of Professional Responsibility are reviewing the death. The Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General is also conducting an assessment.
