Twitter suspends US Border chief for border wall tweet, then reverses itself after public scrutiny

Mark Morgan, Commissioner of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, visited the U.S.-Mexico border at El Paso to tour a stretch of the new border wall on Oct. 21, 2020. Morgan toured a section where the new border wall meets a section of old wall that has yet to be replaced.

Twitter briefly suspended U.S. Customs and Border Protection commissioner Mark Morgan’s account on Wednesday afternoon after Morgan tweeted a post celebrating the border wall construction. His account has since been restored.

Fox News reported Morgan’s account was suspended after Morgan tweeted a video of wall construction, with the caption, “.@CBP & @USACEHQ continue to build new wall every day. Every mile helps us stop gang members, murderers, sexual predators, and drugs from entering our country. It’s a fact, walls work.”

A Twitter spokesperson told Fox News, “We took enforcement action on the tweet…but the decision was reversed following an appeal by the account owner and further evaluation from our team.”

Morgan’s account has since been restored. His account was unlocked when he appealed the decision against his account.

The account suspension action came on the same day Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Google CEO Sundar Pichai were called to testify before the U.S. Senate regarding the censorship of content on their platforms.

Since his account was restored, Morgan has posted several tweets criticizing the social media platform’s actions.

Morgan tweeted, “Back online after Twitter lock out for ~20 hours. @Twitter’s censorship should outrage every American. Not only did Twitter block me from posting, they BLOCKED YOU from the TRUTH. Read my statement.”

Morgan’s statement, in official CBP letterhead, reads:

Twitter is out of control in their clear bias against this administration and their blatant censorship of anything that may go against the policies of those who sit in cubicles in Silicon Valley. America is going down a dangerous road if we do not stand up for free speech and free thought—regardless of our beliefs. What makes America the envy of the world are the previous rights we share such as the freedom of expression and free and open exchanges of ideas. We will not accept the public social media platforms like Twitter that blatantly censor free and open communication with the American people simply because they don’t like the message. This censorship goes against the very ideas this great Nation was founded on, and the rights that many men and women have given their lives to preserve.

In another tweet, Morgan shared a video clip of an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson in which they discussed the controversy.

Morgan tweeted, “.@Twitter LOCKED my account for informing the American people about the WALL. Twitter DENIED my appeal of their BIASED CENSORSHIP. The American People RESPONDED and stood up for FREE SPEECH. Twitter states that they made an ERROR and restores access. This. Must. Stop.”

In the interview segment, Carlson shared a screenshot of Twitter’s initial response to Morgan’s account appeal, in which the social platform said, “Our support team has determined that a violation did take place, and therefore we will not overturn our decision.”

Carlson said Twitter eventually reversed its decision after Morgan’s account was suspended for 20 hours.
