Evacuations were ordered for a housing area on the east end of Camp Pendleton on Wednesday afternoon after a vegetation fire started on large Marine Corps base,

Base officials tweeted Wednesday that the fire was on the west side of De Luz Road and moving east, and that it threatened structures.

On the base’s Facebook page, officials said the De Luz housing area and surrounding buildings are being evacuated, and suggested that evacuees go to Paige Fieldhouse, a gym and fitness center on the military installation.

“There is a potential threat to structures and large smoke plumes will be visible,” officials said in the Facebook posting.

The Camp Pendleton Fire Department is fighting the fire. Officials said the fire could threaten buildings but that the evacuations were precautionary.

Cal Fire San Diego tweeted that it has sent firefighters and aircraft to help. The North County Fire Department also said it was sending in assistance.
