The Donald made him do it.
Retiree Cary De Van reportedly told cops in central Florida that he became enraged while watching President Trump speak Thursday, started chugging vodka, then hopped aboard a golf cart in his retirement community, where he allegedly drove the vehicle into a concrete curb, according to The Smoking Gun. The impact broke the cart’s axle and damaged its windshield.
A police officer responding to the scene reported that when he arrived, De Van was being tended to by paramedics who believed the 82-year-old former IBM employee was physically alright, but might be intoxicated. The officer who filled out the report claimed to smell alcohol on the suspect’s breath as the elderly man explained he’d started drinking vodka a couple hours prior to the early evening crash.
“The defendant stated he was watching President Trump on TV then got really mad at what he said,” the police report claimed.
The president delivered an address from the White House roughly two hours prior to De Van’s mishap, where he spoke of “The China Virus” and the COVID-19 death of former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain and ranted about Democrats. The Smoking Gun reports that De Van is registered as an independent voter.
De Van reportedly agreed to a field sobriety test, which he failed. He was then arrested and given a breathalyzer test. That too indicated he was inebriated, police said. He had no prior DUIs and bond was set at $1,000.
His single-cart crash happened in the sprawling The Villages retirement community, where a Trump supporter was filmed shouting “White power!” from a golf cart in June. President Trump retweeted that clip.
