A 27-year-old Navy sailor was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of killing a woman who police described as an acquaintance at a motel in the Midway District in May.

San Diego police arrested Marquise Tyree Wisher about 4 p.m. at an undisclosed location in Imperial Beach with help from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

Navy spokesman Brian O’Rourke said Wisher is a petty officer 2nd class who has been assigned to Tactical Communications Command One at Naval Base Coronado for about six months.

Wisher is accused of killing 32-year-old Rosa Jaco at a motel on Greenwood Street near Hancock Street on May 4. Homicide Lt. Andra Brown said evidence left at the scene led police to identify Wisher as the suspect.

Police homicide officials have declined to say how Jaco was killed.

Homicide Lt. Matt Dobbs previously said she had marks on her body that indicated a possible injury or postmortem changes in her body.

Medics who treated her called police after people “in the area” became disruptive and tried to impede the medical efforts, Dobbs said. “There were several people that came to the room for a variety of reasons and were being very vocal and emotional, which prompted the call from medics,” he said.

Then, after medics “noticed the condition of her body was inconsistent with the information they were being provided,” they called out homicide investigators, Dobbs said.
