Even though Walt Disney World is closed indefinitely because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the American flag is being raised and lowered every day in the middle of one of its empty theme parks.
A team of essential Disney cast members (which is what Disney calls its employees) is still on site, including the Disney security team. Their duties include continuing to raise and lower the American flag each day in the Town Square at Magic Kingdom.
“Continuing that tradition is a reminder of the gratitude Americans have for veterans and active-duty military service members around the world,” a theme park statement said.
When Disney World first announced it was closing March 16 for two weeks to help curb the spread of the coronavirus, all of Florida’s theme parks announced the same schedule within hours. At the time, all said they would be closed through March 31. But since then, Disney has said it is closed “indefinitely” and will pay its workers through mid-April.
