U.S. Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett announced this week that Holloman Air Force (HAFB) would be the permanent home of the 8th Fighter Squadron.
The announcement meant the base would host three F-16 squadrons for the foreseeable future.
The unit was moved to HAFB temporarily in 2017 after being relocated from Hill Air Force Base in Utah to make room for a growing number of F-35As.
“The Secretary of the Air Force designated Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, as the permanent location for an F-16 Block 40 Formal Training Unit,” a news release from HAFB states.
The unit includes 28 aircraft and approximately 185 officers, civilians and maintenance contractors.
A second F-16 Formal Training Unit based at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona that was scheduled to relocate will remain in place.
